I've been looking for a good protein source to feed Alex as he seems to be sensitive to most meats (except organic lamb) and other common sources of protein.
Here are some of the benefits to hemp hearts... (see http://www.healing-source.com/about_HempHearts_b.htm for more info)
- More required amino acids (proteins) than milk, meat or eggs.
- A
complete protein source – more balanced and digestible than Soy.
- Contains
about 47% oil, 78% of which is Omega or Essential Fats.
- Contains all the
Essential or Omega Fats required for human health.
- Contains several times
more Omega 3 Essential Fats than any fish.
- More energy than energy bars
but with no sugar and less saturated fat.
- Suitable for those unable to eat
Gluten, Sugar, Milk, Nuts and Meat.
- Perfect for those with constipation
and those avoiding carbohydrates.
Yay, yay, yay.
Healthy Choices and, of course, the Hemp Store, carries it in St. John's and you can also order it directly from the company on the website above.
We've known about hemp hearts for at least a couple of months, but haven't been using it very regularly. I finally read the label on the container and it actually looks to have most everything that I'd been looking for. And, it seems to be safe.
The whole family is going to start eating them more regularly. Supposedly 4-5 tablespoons for breakfast in the morning plus some fruits and vegetables gives enough energy to last you until 3pm... I'll keep you posted on how it goes.

I'd love to hear more about your new hemp diet. My toddler loves the chocolate hemp milk plus I make the chocolate hemp cookies and all 4 of my kids love it. We love hemp so much I've devoted the last 3 years researching this plant and built a website about it to get the word around. Glad to see I am not the only one who likes these hearty little seeds.
Hi Chantel: Thanks for your comment. I took a look at your website -- you provide a great resource. I do think hemp hearts have been a God-send for our family and I continue to eat it everyday. My son is taking a bit of a break from it at the moment -- he's wanting to eat his gluten-free millet bread in the morning. But at least, I know that it's there for him.
Did you see the update that I posted here:
